Quick (Indoor) Climbing Definitions
Bouldering
Low-level climbing without the need for rope or a harness, and crash mats below to catch you if you fall. Can be done solo and with minimal equipment (climbing shoes are often still required at most venues) making this a great beginner option.
Top Rope
The climber wears a harness attached to a rope anchored at the top of the climb. The rope is either controlled by an auto-belay or more commonly a second person or ‘belayer’ who pulls in the rope as the climber ascents. This means that if the climber falls, they simply dangle from the rope and can resume climbing, or be lowered to the ground.
Beginners can usually try top rope climbing on their first visit with an introduction, as long as the belayer is signed off as competent by the venue first.
Lead Climbing
A more intermediate to advanced technique where the climber clips the rope to anchors in the rock wall as they climb. The chance for bigger falls is greater and the previous climbing experience is needed to simultaneously climb, clip, and plan your route. You will still need a belayer. This is often the climbing style used outdoors.
Portside Boulders
Osborne Park | O’Connor | Willetton
BOULDERING | GYM
Bouldering is perfect for any level of climber, and Portside Boulders have it all. With a strong emphasis on community and a positive atmosphere, this is a great option for challenging climbs and a friendly crowd!
Built in 2021, the Willetton gym is a state-of-the-art facility, and the newest of the three locations. Expect a great variety of climbs (aka ‘problems’ in the bouldering world) and holds at all the locations, with the added bonus of being able to grab a pizza and craft beer while you’re there.
Urban Jungle Indoor Rock Climbing
Jandakot
BOULDERING | TOP ROPE | LEAD CLIMBING | SPEED CLIMBING | ABSEILING | GYM
If you’re looking to try a variety of different climbing styles, Urban Jungle takes the top spot. They have beginner-friendly top rope climbs and bouldering, all the way up to advanced-level lead climbing and speed climbing. If you’re looking to advance, classes are available for each of these disciplines.
Kids are well-catered for with school holiday programmes, birthday parties, and Youth Squad available for anyone aged five and up.
Adrenaline Vault
Belmont | Cockburn
BOULDERING | TOP ROPE | LEAD CLIMBING | GYM
Expect to find great variety and a friendly atmosphere at Adrenaline Vault. With a near-perfect Google review score, you can be confident you’ll have a good time whether it’s your first time rock climbing, or you’re a seasoned scaler.
You can grab pizzas and toasties at Belmont, and light snacks at Cockburn. Both are fairly large climbing venues with all the climbing types available at both locations.
Adrenaline Vault is an easy option if you’re looking to give climbing a try, while the reasonably priced memberships and regular fresh routes will keep you wanting to come back. Renowned to be some of the best rock climbing in Perth.
Rockface Indoor Rock Climbing Centre
Balcatta
BOULDERING | TOP ROPE | LEAD CLIMBING
Good to know…
With a mix of different climbing styles and ability levels, you’ll be sure to find something at Rockface to give you a decent challenge.
The lead climbing wall is 9m high (Perth’s tallest) and suitable for intermediate and advanced climbers, while the kid-friendly bouldering wall allows little beginners to have a go. The larger bouldering wall provides more of a challenge with some intense overhangs and problems that will keep you busy for a while!
The Boulder Hub
Wangara
BOULDERING | GYM
Good to know…
The Boulder Hub is highly rated by customers who love the friendly atmosphere and some of the best routes around.
There are around 100 routes, or ‘problems’ to choose from which are changed regularly so there will always be something challenging and new to try.
Because bouldering is so beginner-friendly it’s perfect for kids who want to give climbing a try. Seasoned climbers will also feel at home here with challenging 45-degree overhangs and a massive variety of holds.
Wall Climb @ Bounce
Joondalup | Osborne Park
TOP ROPE (AUTO BELAY)
Good to know…
Although Bounce isn’t technically a climbing or bouldering gym, it made the list as an ideal place for little people to have a go at climbing on kid-friendly walls with fun, brightly coloured holds.
Zero experience is needed as the staff will help with the harness, and all of the climbs are auto-belay, taking away the technical abilities needed at some other indoor climbing centres.
You can’t just buy tickets for Wall Climb access so you will have a chance to use the whole Bounce venue. Little climbers will also love the X-park and high ropes course (Joondalup only).
